Summary (English)

  • Work on the construction of the “Tre Valli Umbre” road uncovered a long stretch of wall (over 55 m overall) preserved to a height of no more than 30-40 cm and about 45 cm wide. The structure formed a corner, its longest side, on a north-west/south-east alignment, was exposed for about 46 cm. The wall was probably related to the large villa rustica situated at about 150 m to the south in the locality of San Beroide. In fact, it may have been part of the villa’s enclosure wall. Abutting this structure along its south inner face was found the burial of an infant in an earth grave. Two aes, dating to the 1st century A.D., lay on the top. In 1987, the large funerary enclosure of Cortaccione with central vaulted chamber, fountain and altar in front of the entrance, was excavated. It lay close to the villa but in the opposite direction from the wall.
