Summary (English)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF SARNEVO (Milena Tonkova – milenatonkova@hotmail.com) The site occupies an area of 0.11 ha. A geophysical survey was carried out and it showed that the eastern part of the site is occupied by archaeological structures. Twenty-one sondages, 5 m by 1.50 m in size, were carried out. Archaeological material and structures from the Late Neolithic period (late 6th – beginning of the 5th millennia BC), the second phase of the Early Iron Age (8th – 6th centuries BC) and the 5th – 4th centuries BC, were discovered. The southeastern part of the site was occupied by a Late Neolithic settlement. Debris from houses with clay walls, piles of sherds, a ditch and a house with hearth, a millstone, pottery and animal bones, were discovered. Ritual pits of the Early Iron Age were discovered in the western part of the site. The ceramic vessels belong to the Pshenichevo pottery group and are typical to the second phase of the Early Iron Age. The decoration includes stylized images of birds, the so-called triglyph and metope motifs, and complex combinations of stamped elements. Structures with material from the 5th – 4th centuries BC were documented in the northern part of the site: a patch of fragmentary plaster and sherds, 1.50 – 2 m in diameter, and a shallow pit. An end of a spiral bracelet showing a stylized snake head dated to the 5th century BC and a coin of Philip of Macedon were found at the periphery of the site.
