Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF SABRANO (Krasimir Velkov – dakras@abv.bg) A settlement from the Late Iron Age and the Roman period and four tumuli were documented. Twenty-five sondages in the northern part of the site were carried out. The explored area is located near Dyado Ivanova Settlement Mound, which contains materials from the Chalcolithic period, the Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Late Iron Age archaeological structures, probably pits, were documented in sondages Nos. 24 and 25. The pottery includes sherds from a jug, amphorae and kraters, possibly dated to the 5th century BC. A cultural stratum from the 2nd – beginning of the 4th centuries AD was documented in sondages Nos. 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23. A cultural stratum from the 2nd – beginning of the 4th centuries AD, 30 – 40 cm in thickness, was documented in sondages Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. The pottery includes sherds from red-gloss small cups, dishes, bowls and amphorae, dated to the 2nd – 3rd centuries AD, and sherds dated to the end of the 3rd – beginning of the 4th centuries AD. Spindle whorls, weights for fishnets, a millstone, bricks, tegulae and imbrices were found. Two pits (nos. 1 and 3) of the 9th – 11th centuries were partly explored. The pits cut the stratum from the Roman period and contained charcoal, animal bones and sherds. The animal bones from the excavations are from goats and sheep (20% young animals, 80% old), ox (only old animals), pigs (50% young animals, 50% old), red deer and doe.
