Summary (English)

  • The archaeological site Krst is located in the village Oreshani, 20 km to the south of Skopje. A medieval necropolis from the 10-11 century was discovered during the construction of the foundations of a new church. The excavations were limited only to the places where the foundations were built, revealing 10 different graves. Because of the small excavated area it was impossible to define the organization of the cemetery or the relations between the graves. The deceased were buried in several grave forms: simple pits with a stone slab as a cover or without a cover, cists formed by stones slabs and pits with a partial construction without a covering slab. The inhumation included placing the deceased on their back with the hands set over the lap or the chest. The head was placed on the west side i.e. facing east. Only one grave had a marker – a stone slab set on the western side.
Moveable finds were found in situ only in two graves while the rest of the material was discovered in a disturbed context. There were four finger rings found, two of which had an ellipsoid bezel with an inscribed pentagram and two of them had divided ends. Besides the finger rings, four types of earrings were documented, a necklace made of 32 glass beads and a bronze cross pendant.
