Summary (English)
The site Vrbnik is a pile dwelling settlement located in the Ohrid Lake, 200 metres from the shore, in the bay between Struga and the village Kalishta. The remains of the settlement were found at 3-5 metres depth. During the ‘80s, the information from the locals led to the discovery of the first wooden posts.
The underwater grid was set in 1998 and the archaeological investigations were initiated. In several seasons until 2003, 500 wooden posts were documented. Their average diameter is 20 -30 cm. In this stage of the excavations it is still impossible to reconstruct the arrangement of the houses or their appearance. The moveable finds comprise pottery sherds or complete vessels, fishing net weights, reels, as well as bronze and iron objects. Many of the sherds belong to storage vessels and bowls with no chronological value. On the other side, there are handmade kantharos-shaped vessels with ribbon handles and hemispherical body as well as jugs with cutaway neck which are typical for the Iron Age in the wider region. Among these finds there is one fragment of a black glazed Attic skyphos as an import made in the 6th century BC. The metal finds such are the bronze double pins with a triangular head and the bracelets with overlapping ends decorated with inscribed motifs, represent typical material of the 6th century as well. Besides the jewellery, utilitarian objects such are knives and hooks were also discovered.
The finds imply a conclusion that the Vrbnik settlement existed during the 7th and the 6th century BC and that it is a part of the same cultural group as the other sites of this period in the region of the Lakes Ohrid and Prespa.
