Summary (English)
Excavations took place in the area of the walled cemetery, outside the island’s military curtain wall, parallel to the south wall, an area close to and once communicating with the island’s church (dedicated to St. Bartholomew). The principal aim was to check the marginal position of this cemetery area, which in some circumstances, such as the two great plagues that affected Venice in the 16th and 17th centuries, must have been used as a common grave, the curtain wall acting as a massive container. The 2015 and 2016 excavations showed the large quantity of human remains contained here. Future excavations will aim investigate the lower stratigraphic layers, reconstruct a demographic profile of the site, and identify the cemetery’s perimeter wall.
