Summary (English)

  • Archaeological remains were identified in the locality of Piano di San Biagio (Crotone) during a watching brief prior to the construction of a wind park
The site is situated on one of the hill terraces overlooking the town from the west. A survey identified a spread of surface material and a geophysical survey then revealed anomalies suggesting the presence of buried structures.

Excavation revealed the presence of a complex, datable to the 5th century, comprising an apsidal building on an east-west alignment with a small adjacent room. Tombs were found around the structure, particularly on the north-west side. Slightly later in date than the structure, they contained very interesting grave goods.

The razed walls and reuse of several architectural elements in the necropolis attested the building’s abandonment and robbing. This is the earliest church known to date in the territory of Crotone.
