    Summary (English)

    • As part of the project to restore the house known as “Casa Gallizio”, situated at the corner of via XX Settembre and via Diaz, two slit trenches were opened in the courtyard in order to check the line and state of preservation of part of the southern section of the town walls of Alba Pompeia. In fact, a section of wall with traces of sesquipedales was visible in the cellars of the house. The exact position of the structure was established in the northern part of the courtyard. At the western end of trench 1, the wall was exposed at about 1.60 m below ground level. Both sides of the 1.80 m wide wall were preserved, the external facing built of brick/tile and split cobbles, the inner one more irregular and made up of intact cobblestones. The wall appeared at the same level in trench 2 in the eastern part of the courtyard, but its facings had been robbed. An inspection of the cellars revealed arched foundation structures with a brick-built arched lintel and a cobble and mortar pillar built abutting the terrain. These structures may relate to the church of S. Bernardino, which archive documents indicate stood somewhere in the area, or the convent/monastery attached to it. The project to recover the building, which involved substantial excavation for the construction of underground garages, has been modified in order to conserve the important structure that came to light.
