Summary (English)

  • The excavation of 2010 carried out at the “Demokracia” square, near by “P.Meksi” street, in the city of Durrës, revealed parts of the urban area of the ancient Dyrrahium. Initially the Roman road network was discovered, which delimits a residential area. The road network is oriented north-south and east-west. The roads are 3 m wide and cobbled with big river stones. The stones are positioned in a hogback form, higher in the middle in order to enable water drainage. On the roadsides were found regular channels 0, 5 m wide and 1, 1 m high. The channels are covered with semi-circular vaults, made of Roman tiles, on top of which the sidewalks were set. The remains of the foundations found during the excavation show the existence of a colonnaded arcade between the road and the sidewalks. The majority of the dwellings discovered date to the Roman period. They consisted of three parts: a shop, a productive and a residential area. Traces of peristyle dwellings were also found. From the Byzantine period only foundation levels, were found the most important of which represents an area with a semi-circular plan. It shows clearly that the floor level of the dwellings was raised in the 5th and 6th century A.D. with a deposit 1.3 m. thick. The finds discovered during the excavations consisted of pottery, objects of domestic use, glass products, such as cups, decorative containers, perfume bottles, seals, pins, nails, textile remains etc. Of significant importance are the discoveries of coins, dating mostly to the 2nd century A.D. They revealed an artisan neighbourhood of the ancient city of Dyrrah during the Roman period. Most probably its origin dates to the Hellenistic period, and it continued to be inhabited in the 5th and 6th centuries A.D.
