Summary (English)

  • The excavation of 2010 undertaken in the western part of the necropolis of the ancient city of Hadrianopolis revealed six tombs. The earliest stratigraphical level excavated in the necropolis, date to the 2nd century A.D., exactly at the time of the monumentalization of the habitation area of the city. One of the uncovered tombs was of a monumental type, known as naomorfo in antis and contained two graves, set beside each other. It represents a very well known typology in Epirus, especially in the region of Nikopolis. The other tombs, some of which appear to have been previously opened and disturbed, represent a simple type of construction. They are built of limestone slabs (bonded with mortar or set in dry), arranged in a box-like form (cist type) with a gable roof cover. The inhumation practice was obvious in all the excavated graved; the dead individuals were disposed in a supine position with their hands crossed on the chest. The dead individuals, as shown by the poor and simple grave goods uncovered, seem to belong to a lower social class of the city. However, among the materials discovered, a small Corinthian pottery cup, dated between the 2nd and the 3rd Centuries AD, was found. It contains decoration in relief with metopali scenes, one of which depicts a character making an offer to the god of fertility, Priapus.
