Summary (English)

  • During the 2012 excavations in the extra-mural basilica in Elbasan, a large part of the monument was revealed. Thus, in the outer part of the apse, the excavated space was expanded by about 1 m, where in the part adjacent to the wall of the apse, fragments of window panes continued to emerge. Some small, illegible Byzantine coins also came to light. Another area where excavations were carried out was in the northern wing of the transept where the work was concentrated on a limited area and as a result it was possible to discover a part of its floor. Excavations in the northern nave in the upper part of the destruction layer revealed architectural elements of the northern arch. In the southern nave, excavations were concentrated only on a small area in the western part of this space. After removing the upper layer of the ruin, two other columns of the southern arch, parts of the vault of the arch, came to light. Surveys in the central nave were limited and at their conclusion a part of the mosaic floor adjacent to the stylobate of the northern arch was discovered. From the excavations in the narthex, the entrance to its northern annex also came to light. After the complete discovery of the floor of the narthex, under the mosaic, in the northern part of the narthex, the presence of a tomb was revealed. The grave had an east-west orientation, with a length of 2m, a width of 1.16m and a depth of 1.18m. In the exonarthex, the excavations were concentrated only in its southern part. Recently, at a distance of about 4.20 m to the east of the southern annex of the narthex, a north-south wall resting on the southern wall of the nave came to light. Only a length of about 5m was discovered.
