Summary (English)

  • The field season of 2010 in the ancient city of Bylis focused in so-called monument of Terenziano, revealed a year ago during the excavation of the Episcopal quarter, near the Late Roman basilical complex. This year, the excavations were expanded toward the western and northern wings of the monument, uncovering its wall limits at this side. The building has several construction phases as suggested by the various building technique noted in the successive archaeological contexts. The materials associated with these contexts, mainly the pottery, show that the initial phase of the monument date in the Hellenistic period. A new multi-roomed construction happened during the Roman period, followed by the structural transformation of the Late Roman period. In the central area of the monuments, which dates to the Roman period, the excavation uncovered two bases bearing Latin inscriptions. These were dedications made for Maximos and Terenziano, the two sons of Quinto Allio. Near the dedication of Maximus, a marble statue was unearthed. It has the physical features and the typical dress of the Roman aristocracy, probably related to the person it was dedicated. The marble is of a good quality, a material which is likely to have been imported from the Italiian peninsula. Although the edges of the southern side of the Roman phase of the building were not identified, the plan and size of the monument suggest a domus in the possession of the aristocratic family of Quinto Allio. At the end of this season, restorations works were undertaken in the walls of the northern and western sides of the monument.
