Summary (English)

  • In October 2006 walled structures of Roman date emerged during excavations by Telecom for the extension of the telephone network in via Ariosto on the part of the Esquiline that is commonly thought to be the site of the Horti Lamiani . Investigations identified at least two construction phases. The first phase is represented by an opus mixtum wall (B), with opus reticulatum facing surmounted by a brickwork, dating to the Hadrianic period. In the second phase the structure was cut by the construction of a substantial conglomerate wall (A) both sides of which bear clear traces of the uprights from the formwork. Dating is provided by the building techniques, especially that of the opus mixtum wall, whose characteristics find comparisons with walls of Hadrianic date. Both structures are cut by the foundations of the adjoining building, the ex-school “Silvio Pellico”, inside which various Roman and late Roman structures belonging to the service area of a domus were uncovered during restructuring work in 2005. A probable third structure was found in the northern sector of the trench. Due to its bad state of preservation and construction technique it is not possible to establish a precise date or function.
