Summary (English)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN PHILIPPOPOLIS (Zheni Tankova – RAM.Plovdiv@gmail.com) The site is situated in the souhern foot of Dzhambaztepe. In 1976, part of decumanus with adjacent buildings, situated in two insulae, and a sector of the fortification wall dated after the 5th century AD were explored over an area of 0.1 ha. The resumed explorations covered an area of c. 300 sq. m. The decumanus was explored for 29 m. The street has curbstones and is 6.30 m wide, paved with large syenite slabs. Building A was discovered in the insula situated to the north of the decumanus. The building is located to the west of the cistern explored in 1976 and consists of four adjacent rooms arranged in a line. The walls of the rooms are constructed in opus mixtum and are 55 cm wide. Only room No. 2, 7.50 m by 5.70 m in size, is entirely preserved. There was a water-conduit, adjacent to its inner side and repaired with a lead plate. The floor of room No. 4 was paved with bricks. There were traces of fire spread over the floor. A cardo with curbstones, 5.70 m wide and paved with large syenite slabs, was discovered to the south of the decumanus. Both streets form a T junction. Two rooms of Building B were discovered in the insula, situated to the south of the decumanus and to the west of the cardo. Room No. 1 has two entrances directed towards the two streets and is paved with gneiss slabs. The walls were built of mortared rubble masonry.
