Summary (English)

  • CONBUSTICA (Krassimira Luka – bularchaeo@gmail.com) The explorations were carried out along the eastern fortification wall. The early occupation of the military camp dated from the reign of Tiberius and Claudius to the middle of the 2nd century AD. Burned floors plastered with clay were explored and layers of charcoal and ash, up to 15 cm thick, were documented over the floors. The buildings were with timber constructions plastered with clay and were destroyed during a fire. The finds included pottery with barbotine decoration, part of it black-gloss, and a brick with a stamp that reads: [Leg(ionis) VII C(lаudiаe)] p(iаe) f(idelis), indicating the presence of a vexillatio of Legio VII Claudia in Conbustica. The Late Antique settlement appeared after the beginning of the 4th century AD. The layer that leveled the construction site was situated over the remains of the Early Roman military camp and was cut by the foundations of the fortification wall. Four coins of Constantius II, Julian the Apostate and Valens were found, the latest one minted in AD 364 – 375. Judging from the coins, the fortification wall was constructed in AD 375 – 400. The finds included jewelry, tools, pottery and building ceramics. The fortified settlement existed until the middle of the 5th century AD, judging from coins minted by the Theodosian Dynasty.
