Summary (English)

  • Archaeological excavations in cooperation with the Russian Institute of Archeology and Ethnology from Novosibirsk and the Podgorica Museum conducted in the period from April 3th to April 30th 2015. at the Bioče site, they aimed to specify the stratigraphic situation in sectors that are not disturbed by anthropogenic influence and in which the accumulation of archaeological and paleontological material is not disturbed. Sector E-16 and E-15 with a total area of 2m2 was chosen for that purpose.
In the initial phase of preparation of works, a unique system of surface marking, founded in 1986, was applied at the site. An alphanumeric notation system was used, with numbers denoting meters on the OX axis and letters on the OY axis.
Systematization of cultural sediments was performed on a compact surface of 1×1m square and conditional levels of 5-10cm depth within the boundaries of one lithological layer. The research was performed in 9 separate stratigraphic units.
During the archeological excavations, 2886 artifacts were obtained. The original splitting is dominated by a radial splitting method in its one-sided variant and a simple parallel splitting. In the stone quarry industry, small debris and shells are mainly represented. The tool is dominated by small and medium scrapers, primarily elongated shapes. Paleontological material includes 151 bone specimens. In terms of fauna, ungulates predominate: representatives of the equine species of unequal-toed Perissodactyla and even-toed Artidactyla. The remains of horses of the genus Equus predominate among the even-toed ungulates, close to modern Equus caballus. Rhinoceros remains are very rare. Even-toed ungulates are represented primarily by tiny representatives of the Caprinae subfamily. A large bull is also present. A significant part of the remains are the teeth of deer: elk (Alces alces) and red deer (Cervus elaphus). Introduction to the bone material from the Bioče site shows its significant crushing. Practically, all the tubular (hollow) bones, especially the limb joints, are broken down to remove the bone marrow. This indicates a high level of utilization of bioresources by the inhabitants of the Morača river valley.
The raw material of the stone industry comes from the river Morača. Gray-green stone, medium effusives (basalts), sandstones, aleurolites, lava and lava breccia were mainly used for breaking. The raw material is cracked pebbles of smaller dimensions.
Lithological layers of interest for excavations that are not disturbed by anthropogenic impact in the field of the Bioča site (high degree of cementation) do not require conservation measures. All archaeological and paleontological material, after appropriate processing, description and analysis, was handed over for safekeeping to the Museum and Galleries of Podgorica.
