Summary (English)

  • This independent investigation has been carried out through the comparison between traces seen on satellite photographs and those documented on the ground. The traces take the form of cuts and the remains of rooms cut into the tufa bedrock. The ancient structure is almost completely buried and covered by vegetation and only some parts of the outer perimeter are visible. It is probably a rock-cut amphitheatre, like the one at Sutri, however this can only be confirmed by excavation. The structures are situated on private land adjacent to a vast necropolis and close to the area that is thought to be the site of the Roman town of Sorrina or Sorrina Nova. The latter is attested by epigraphic evidence. To date there have been no systematic excavations in the area, while the many underground chamber tombs are little known and have not been adequately studied.
