Summary (English)
Following a watching brief on road works undertaken by Autovie Venete S.p.A. a number of trenches were opened at Savogna d’Isonzo (GO) by the Villesse-Gorizia link road. The discovery of several patches of the via Aquileia – Emona, identified at a short distance from the structures of the Mainizza Roman bridge – known from at least the mid 17th century, but the subject of a new study in 2003 – confirmed the published suggestion for its route. In the area involved in the road works, the ancient road, having reached Gradisca d’Isonzo, crossed the river and curved towards the south-east, where the modern Villesse-Gorizia link road intercepted it.
The exposed section of the via glareata was characterized by a rather lacunose layer of cobbles embedded in compact soil and presented the classic “donkey-back” profile.
An inhumation burial in a simple earth grave was found at the side of the road. The deceased was buried with his arms along his sides and hands placed together on the stomach; the legs were outstretched. This man was over thirty years old at death and probably between 158 and 160 cm tall.
