Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR SUVOROVO (Vladimir Slavchev – vladosl@yahoo.com) An oven was discovered in the Mediaeval house, in the corner between Trenches В3, В4, С3 and С4. A sondage aiming at studying the stratigraphy was carried out in Trench B3. The earliest occupation in the settlement mound occurred during the Middle Chalcolithic Period. A wall of ashlars, with an average size of 40 cm by 30 cm by 30 cm, was built in that time. The wall was over 60 cm wide and was preserved up to 85 cm in height. The stratum from the earliest occupation was 30 – 45 cm thick. A second stratum of the Middle Chalcolithic Period, 50 – 60 cm thick, was documented above. The stone wall continued to exist in that time. A third stratum of the Middle Chalcolithic Period, c. 35 cm thick, was located above and it was the highest and the latest stratum documented in the settlement mound. Building 11-1 was situated in Trenches А3, А4, В3, В4, С3 and С4. It was burned. The building had an L-shaped layout with three rooms. Its walls were constructed of wattle-and-daub and were 25 – 30 cm wide. A clay platform was discovered in the northeastern corner of the building. Part of a clay pan, 90 cm long, over 50 cm wide and 8 cm deep, was explored in the northwestern part of the building. Remains from an oven were discovered in the northern room. The top of the dome of the oven was shaped as a model of a house, 35 cm lon, 35 cm wide and 22 cm high. Remains of a second oven were discovered in the southeastern room, while remains of a third oven and over 60 fragmentary ceramic vessels were found in the southwestern room. Building 11-1 was probably a potter’s workshop. The finds related to the pottery-making were the pan, c. 40 quartzite smoothing tools, three bone spatulas used for stamped and incised decoration of the pottery, three bone awls used for decoration and two balls of potter’s clay prepared for producing vessels.
