    Summary (English)

    • In 2006, the excavations inside Palazzo Melatino uncovered the well-preserved structures and floors of a domus. It falls within an urban area where numerous archaeological discoveries have been made, such as the domus del Leone in Via di Porta Carrese, Vico delle Ninfe, Via dei Mille, and the domus di Madonna delle Grazie.

The artisans who decorated the rooms of the domus del Melatino were inspired by known models echoing Pompeian mosaics and the rich marble floors of Imperial Rome. The large peristyle of the phase I domus has various parallels in 1st century B.C. Pompeian rooms, as the frescoed wall that closes the room, with painting imitating encrustations of polychrome marble arranged a telaio, is similar to the Pompeian II Style. The large central room of the phase II domus, which was probable a reception room, had an opus sectile floor echoing those in the wealthy Roman domus, in particular those in Hadrian’s villa, as beautiful the phase III opus sectile floor seemed to be inspired by the recently discovered floor below Palazzo Valentini in Rome.

The careful choice of style and the richness of the materials attest the economic and political importance of the owners of the domus within the dominant class in the city of Interamnia throughout the imperial period until late antiquity.
