Summary (English)
An inspection undertaken at Plars di Mezzo, during a limited levelling operation above the “Huebenweg” road, revealed an occupation layer at about 1m below ground level. It contained fragments of pottery vessels, soap-stone and metal objects of Roman date. Considering the well conserved state of the finds and the nature of the archaeological remains in lot 862/3, 100m up slope, a closer examination of the deposit was undertaken. The occupation level uncovered was rich in pottery and Roman coins and overlay earlier Roman levels of various phases. Investigation of the latter revealed the foundations of walls with a lime mortar and several post-holes, as well as pottery and coins. The excavation was divided into sectors. The first contained a broad dry-stone wall similar to the structure found in lot 862/3. Work in the second sector, which comprised the entire western side of this lot, concentrated on the removal of sub-agraian soil which contained Roman material. When the occupation level was reached, a roadbed of Roman date was revealed. Investigations will continue in 2004. (Catrin Marzoli)
