    Summary (English)

    • The second campaign in the forum of Liternum continued the investigation of the basilica and temple podium’s foundation levels (trenches V and VI).
Trench V (initially 10 × 3 m) was opened on the east side of the podium and basilica, in the sector linking these structures. The construction phases in this area were documented by overlaying floors and their make ups and by the different building techniques: opus quasi reticulatum, relating to the basilica’s first phase, opus reticulatum, documented in the wall supporting the narrow passageway between the basilica and the temple podium, opus mixtum, relating to the monumental rebuilding of the podium, and lastly, the opus vittatum of the structures supporting and raising the portico level between the basilica and podium, linking the forum and the area behind it. The preliminary study of the materials from the layer cut by the foundation for the opus mixtum podium wall dates them to within the 1st century A.D.

Trench VI was opened outside the basilica’s north-east corner. This sector was characterised by the presence of a cistern dating to the first phase of the basilica in opus quasi reticulatum. The excavations showed that the cistern was obliterated during the basilica’s second construction phase, attested by the south and east opus reticulatum walls, and dated by the Italian sigillata to the Augustan period. The portico on all four sides of the forum was also built in this phase.
