Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF BRODILOVO (Deyan Dichev – dejan.dichev@abv.bg) In the Eastern Sector, fragmentary tegulae, sherds and burned fragmentary wattle-and-daub were discovered in Trenches К10/11. In the Western Sector, ceramic vessels fragmented in situ, including table amphorae, cups, Megarian bowls and an oinochoe, a terracotta figurine of Aphrodite, a quern of the Olynthian Type and carbonized grain were found in Trenches 35/6. A path covered with stone slabs was discovered, leading towards the entrance of the tower. In the Northern Sector, the explorations of the outer face of the fortification wall continued in Trenches E7 and Zh7. Fragmentary roof-tiles and sherds were found. A layer with traces from fire was discovered, containing ceramic vessels fragmented in situ: pots and cups, sherds from a dolium and a strainer. A quern, an iron pickaxe, a spearhead and a reaping hook were found and a clay eschara was discovered. A pile of burned fragmentary wattle-and-daub from a room with approximate size 4 m by 4 m of the first occupation period was explored beneath. Ceramic vessels fragmented in situ identical to those of the second occupation period were found: dishes, bowls, a dolium and table amphorae. Many vessels contained burned grain. Fragments from a decorated clay eschara were also found. The second occupation period could be related to the bronze coins of King Kotys II discovered in 2014. The first and the second occupation periods ended with destructive fires. The first occupation period of the Thracian tyrsis dated to 125 – 75 BC. Some time after the tyrsis was destroyed during the late 70s BC, it was occupied again and subsequently, it was destroyed around 50 BC.
