Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF BRODILOVO (Deyan Dichev – dejan.dichev@abv.bg) In the Central Sector, burned fragmentary wattle-and-daub and roof-tiles were discovered in Trenches Zh7 and Z7. About 15 ceramic vessels (dolia, amphorae, jugs, cups, unguentaria and a guttus) were discovered in situ on the floor, along with a terracotta kernos–figurine of a bull, terracotta loom weights and spindle whorls, an iron key, an iron makhaira, semi-produced iron objects and a quern of the Olynthian Type. Burned common vetch and wild pears were found in the amphorae. The remains belonged to the first floor of a building that adjoined the western fortification wall and the inner side of the tower. In Trenches Z10/11/12, sherds from dishes, cups and an imported krater and fragments from a decorated clay eschara were discovered in front of the inner side of the eastern fortification wall. In Trench M9, a sector of the southern fortification wall was excavated and sherds, including from dolia, fragments from roof-tiles and iron mill bars were found. In Trench I5, the outer side of the western fortification wall and part of the outer southern side of the tower were discovered. The wall and the tower were built of roughly-cut stones bonded with clay. The pottery from the excavations dated mostly to 100 – 75 BC.
