Summary (English)

  • MESAMBRIA (Todor Marvakov – tmarvakov@abv.bg, Martin Giuzelev, Konstantin Gospodinov) The site was situated to the west of the Church of St. John the Baptist. The Mediaeval and Late Antique strata were destroyed by later construction works. Mediaeval Pit No. 1 was explored, 1.70 m deep and containing animal bones, charcoal, shreds from sgraffito pottery and a bronze coin. A room of a building was discovered, with wall constructed in rubble masonry and 60 cm wide. The upper parts of the walls were built of sun-dried bricks. Tegulae and imbrices of the Laconian and the Corinthian Types were found. The building was constructed during the Late Classical or Early Hellenistic period, judging from the bronze coins of Mesambria and the sherds, including from amphorae from Mende and Thasos, black-gloss pottery and Thracian pottery. Pit No. 2 was explored, 1.45 m in diameter and 35 cm in depth, containing decorated Thracian sherds from urns, kiatoi and pots of the Early Iron Age. Pit No. 3 was discovered, 2.45 m in diameter and 1.05 m in dept, containing Late Archaic and Early Classical sherds, including from Thracian pottery. Pit No. 4 was explored, 1.25 m in diameter, containing sherds from the Classical period, including from amphorae, jugs, dishes, ichthyai, black-gloss vessel (including a skyphos), Thracian pottery, and fragments from tegulae and imbrices.
