Work continued in 2002, in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Alto Adige, on the Copper Age cult site of Pigloner Kopf. In the south sector of the refuge another small, copper axe-head was found. It lay with the cutting edge of the blade facing upwards. Its surface was covered by the same patina, caused by burning, as was present on the other four axe-heads found in previous years. Next to it were numerous fragments of pottery and the scraps from flint working that characterize this bell-shaped deposit. Also present were a copper awl and calcified animal bones within thick, charcoal-rich layers. On the summit of the Piglone Kopf a second hoard of flint objects came to light. Near the first group of foliate points, found in 1995, lay a second group comprising 6 arrow heads, 3 scrapers and 4 blades all heaped on top of each other. In the vicinity, two other foliate points emerged, which would seem to belong to the first group, judging by their manufacture. Pigloner Kopf can therefore be interpreted as a Copper Age cult site that was repeatedly used as a votive pyre and for the ritual deposition of flint objects. (Catrin Marzoli)
