Summary (English)

  • During the 2017 campaign, excavations took place in two distinct areas.
    East Area (SS15)

The excavations covered an area of about 70 m2.

In quadrants Y-AC/18-23 the removal of US 5, a yellow very compact silty surface was completed. This exposed a surface (US 7) made up of a grey-brown moderately compact deposit containing numerous medium sized squared stones and some archaeological material.
A trial trench was opened in quadrants Y-AD/23-21 in order to gain an understanding of the relationships between the different layers exposed. The removal of US 7 within this trench made it possible to uncover US 3 further to the west, already identified in other zones of area SS15, while in the eastern half of the trench US 7 covered a deposit of sandy brown soil that was probably natural (US 8). The subsequent removal of US 8 exposed a brown compact deposit with medium sized squared cobblestones (US 9), on top of which there were numerous finds. US 9 did not extend uniformly across all of the western part of the trench, where patches of a yellow silty deposit containing abundant small stones (US 10) appeared in several places. The excavation of this trench terminated with the removal of US 8.
The investigation of area SS15 also continued in quadrants Y-AC/17-14 where spits 2 and 3 were excavated. At the opposite end, which now includes quadrants Y-AA/24-29, new quadrants were opened and a small ovoid pit was found that contained Eneolithic material.

    North-west Area (TrA)

The excavations covered an area of about 25 m2. In the zone occupied by quadrants L-P/8-11 the deposit was removed in 5 cm spits. The deposit appeared rich in materials especially along the row of quadrants L-M/11-8. The abundance of materials was also confirmed by their presence in section, showing that the archaeological deposit continued beyond the excavation edge.
The lowering of the baulk separating the area of Trench 1 TrA from area SS88-2006 continued. The finds can all be dated to the Neolithic period.
