Summary (English)

  • BONONIA (Zdravko Dimitrov – zdravkodimitrov74@gmail.com) The excavations continued in Tower No. 8 on the western fortification wall. The tower is decagonal, c. 25 m in diameter. Strata from the Ottoman period, the Middle Ages and Late Antiquity (4th – 5th centuries AD) were explored. A layer with traces from fire of mid 5th century AD was documented, containing coins of Arcadius and Theodosius II. Seventeen coins of the end of the 4th – first half of the 5th centuries AD were found in Trench B2. The finds from the excavations included ceramic vessels of the Ottoman period, Late Antique iron objects from the wooden structures in the fortification tower, sherds and coins. The Roman pottery included terra sigillata, red-gloss and plain ware, amphorae. Tower No. 8 was built simultaneously with the fortification wall during the AD 330s. The western fortification gate was situated to the south of the tower. During the 13th – 14th centuries the ruins of the tower were occupied and sherds, two scyphates and an earring were found.
