Summary (English)

  • BONONIA (Zdravko Dimitrov – zdravkodimitrov74@gmail.com, Fionera Filipova) The excavations of the western fortification wall continued. A sector situated to the south of fortification Tower No. 8 was explored. Strata of the Ottoman period, the Middle Ages and Late Antiquity were discovered. The lowest stratum excavated so far dated to the 6th century AD, judging from the sherds of amphorae, pots and dolia. A section of the western fortification wall of Bononia, over 15 m long, was excavated. The wall was preserved up to c. 3 m in height; it was almost 4 m wide, built in opus mixtum. The northern jamb of the western fortification gate of Bononia of the Roman period and Late Antiquity was discovered. The finds from the excavations included a big iron key found close to the western gate, Mediaeval dishes with sgraffito decoration, coins of the Bulgarian Tsardom of Vidin of the 14th century, pottery and porcelain of the Ottoman period, terracotta tobacco pipes of the 15th – 19th centuries.
