Summary (English)

  • BONONIA (Zdravko Dimitrov – zdravkodimitrov74@gmail.com, Fionera Filipova, Ilko Tsvetkov) After 25 years the archaeological explorations of Bononia situated on the southern bank of the Danube were resumed. During the previous excavations, eight towers on the fortification wall and several buildings have been documented. In 2014, the explorations were carried out in the area of Tower No. 8 on the western fortification wall close to the gate, where rescue excavations have been conducted in 1988 – 1989. The walls of Tower No. 8 were discovered, 4 m wide and built in opus mixtum. The tower had a decagonal layout, while its interior had a semicircular layout. Layers from the Ottoman period and the Late Middle Ages were documented. The western fortification wall was over 4 m wide, built in opus mixtum and it was synchronous to the tower. Late Antique layers were discovered and coins of Constantine the Great, Constantine II, Constans and Constantius were found. The fortification wall was built during the first half of the 4th century AD, most probably during the reign of Constantine the Great during the AD 330s.
