Summary (English)

  • SERDICA (Alexander Stanev – alex_ss@abv.bg) Explorations in the area of the Lions’ Bridge on Vladaiska River were carried out. Nineteen walls were discovered, built of mortared stones and of ashlars, some of them with upper parts constructed in opus mixtum. The walls belonged to several complexes. Wall No. 5 measured 5.10 m by 2.70 m and its southern and eastern sides were constructed of ashlars with drafted margins, held together with leaded iron clamps. Its foundation had a planking of oak boards. Oak posts, c. 1 m long, were driven into the ground below the foundation. Walls Nos. 5, 7, 13 and 14 were parts of a bridge over the river, while the rest of the walls belonged to structures related to the road and to the bridge. Judging from the pottery and the coins, the bridge was built in the 4th century AD and functioned until the 6th century AD.
