Summary (English)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN KYUSTENDIL (Doichin Grozdanov – doichyn_eg@abv.bg, Galina Grozdanova) Early Christian Basilica No. 1 is situated in the Late Antique and Mediaeval fortress and had been explored during 1906 – 1912. The basilica was three-aisled, 29.50 m by 17 m in size. It was built of mortared stones. In 2014, the following parts of the basilica were still preserved: part of the apse, five rectangular bases of columns that separated the central nave from the southern aisle, part of the western wall of the southern aisle and part of the stone pavement in the southern aisle. The southeastern room was located inside the southern aisle. A fragment of mosaic was discovered in a layer with debris. The finds included coins of the end of the 2nd – 6th centuries AD and of the 12th – 13th centuries (Byzantine scyphates), small knives, a lead spindle whorl, a bronze exagium, a belt buckle of the Sucidava Type, a bronze spherical button and iron arrowheads. Basilica No. 1 was built at the end of the 4th – beginning of the 5th century AD.
