Summary (English)

  • TUIDA (Nikolai Sirakov – niki_sirakov@abv.bg, Veselin Ignatov) The excavations continued in the northern sector of the Late Antique and Mediaeval fortress Tuida, to the north of the large administrative building and to the south of the northern fortification gate. A disturbed layer c. 40 cm thick was documented, containing sherds, fragmentary building ceramics and coins from the 4th to 13th centuries. Walls of Late Antique buildings were discovered. Ten pits were explored, containing fragmentary building ceramics, sherds of the 11th – 12th centuries, bones from oxen, goats and pigs. A water-conduit of the end of the 9th – 11th century was discovered, built of uneven stones bonded with hydraulic mortar and related to the extensive building activities during the First Bulgarian Kingdom. A roof-tile with incised proto-Bulgarian sign ΙΥΙ also testified to this period. The finds from the excavations included a small cross of copper alloy showing Christ and dated to the 11th – 12th century and a bronze plate from a finger-ring showing a peacock.
