Summary (English)

  • The main objective of this excavation is to gain a better understanding of the structures associated with the production in the workshops situated at the south-eastern corner of insula VI 16, in order to integrate them into the Pompeian production system. Two of the three rooms forming workshop VI 16, 3-4 were recently cleaned by M. Flohr who interpreted them as a fullonica associated with another process for wool-working. This season’s campaign furthered the investigation of the stratigraphy in the large open space to the south-east of the workshop and cleaned the part associated with the fullonica.

The stratigraphy in the south-eastern corner had been badly disturbed by modern interventions (pit for preparing lime for restoration work following the bombing of the site in 1943, water-supply pipes).

Two new cistern-mouths were discovered, however it was not possible to date their construction. The first clear evidence of activities probably dates to the period of restoration following the 62/63 A.D. earthquake. This consisted of two new pits, whose depth and size in plan suggest they relate to the extraction of ante-Plinian eruptive material to be mixed with sand and used for restoration work.

Soon afterwards, various interventions were carried out in these rooms for the installation of a textile workshop. In addition to those identified in 2018 for working the raw wool, the first identified structures were a 420-litre vat and a structure for draining water. Both can be associated with the preparation of hemp.

Following a probable second earthquake, the workshop was extended and transformed: it is possible that a first fullonica was installed at the same time as the other activities described in 2018. Just before the eruption, the workshop was no longer functioning. On the one hand the water supply was suspended and being repaired citywide. On the other, work was being carried out to build a larger fullonica with two vats and three spaces for cloth treading.
