Summary (English)

  • PHILIPPOPOLIS (Elena Kesyakova – RAM.Plovdiv@gmail.com) The explorations of the western part of the forum 136 m by 143 m in size continued. The forum was built during the reign of Vespasian and existed until the middle of the 5th century AD. A section of the early stylobate of the western portico, 30 m long, was discovered. The connection between the portico, the vestibulum and the area of the forum was explored. During the third construction period, a corridor 1.60 m wide connected the entrance of the vestibulum with the portico. Its floor was plastered with mortar situated over the floor of the second construction period. The jambs from both sides of the corridor were constructed of sun-dried bricks faces with marble veneer. The two shops situated to the north of the vestibulum were entirely explored. Layers with traces from fire and roof-tiles were discovered on their floors. In 2012, a sector of the cardo that run along the western propylaea of the forum was discovered and in 2015, a sector of the decumanus that reached the western propylaea was explored. The decumanus was 6.20 m wide with kerbs on its both sides. Two pedestals for columns were discovered on the northern side of the street. A wall of roughly-cut stones bonded with mortar and a threshold were discovered on the southern side of the decumanus and a marble Corinthian capital was found. A drain of a latrine was also discovered.
