Summary (English)

  • The site Pista, located near the village Novo Selo, was discovered during groundwork in 2001. Excavations were conducted during 2006 by the Museum of Veles on the highest part of the flattened terrace. The three trenches confirmed a Neolithic settlement located on a flattened mound (toumba) that dominates the surrounding. The mound was formed by several successive settlements, raised one above the other, during a longer period. On the south side the mound rises, while the other three sides gradually merge into the wide open field. Typologically, the pottery discovered in nine strata (deposit of 4 m) determines the chronology of existence of this Neolithic settlement, without interruptions, from the beginning of the Early Neolithic, through the Middle Neolithic, all the way to the beginning of the Late Neolithic. During this long existence, the settlement continuously developed and certainly had changes which are particularly notable in the material culture, the construction and the spiritual culture.

The abundance of moveable archaeological finds (mostly pottery as well as objects made of bone and stone) allow clear overview of the long period of existence where the pottery appears as a key factor in determination of the phases of development.

The changes in the construction appear slower as the result of usage of the same building material, the human potential and the functionality of the house in satisfying the basic needs of the family. The changes here can be noticed in a longer period, particularly in the interior arrangement and the spaciousness of the house. The determination of the phases of development has been made according to the existing and scholarly accepted division of the Anzabegovo-Vršnik cultural group in four phases, and according to the specific features of each phase. Noticeable are certain exceptions, particularly with the pottery from the layers of the Early Neolithic, which is the result of local characteristics or it is a new feature that has to be further analyzed.
