Summary (English)

  • CARIA (Boyan Ivanov – b_totev@abv.bg, Dobri Dobrev, Varbin Varbanov) The excavations continued in the southern sector of the Late Antique fortification wall, in front of the southwestern corner fortification tower discovered in 1996. Part of a wall built of faced stones bonded with mud, 60 – 70 cm wide, was discovered. It was situated on the level of the mouths of the two dolia of the 6th century AD, discovered in 2016 and located in front of the rectangular tower of the castellum. Late Antique and Hellenistic sherds were found in the lower strata. A wall was excavated, built of ashlars bonded with mortar, 11.30 m long and 2.75 m wide. It was the western wall of the southwestern rectangular tower of the earlier quadriburgium. A collapsed roof was discovered in the tower. The finds from the excavations included 24 coins, including one Hellenistic, three of the 4th century AD, 15 of the 5th century AD and three of the 4th – 5th centuries AD, sherds (95 % were Late Antique and the rest were Hellenistic and Roman), 70 – 75 % of which belonged to amphorae (over 95 % of the amphorae were of the 5th – 6th centuries AD). According to the results from the excavations in 1977 – 1979, 1995 – 1996 and 2016 – 2018, the site was occupied during the 4th century BC – 1st century AD. The quadriburgium was built during the 4th century AD, while the castellum was built during the second half of the 5th century AD and existed through the 6th century AD. The southwestern tower of the quadriburgium was dismantled and its ashlars were reused during the construction of the castellum.
