Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF MOSHTANETS (Galina Grozdanova – galya_std@yahoo.com, Tanya Hristova) The site covered an area of 1 ha and was situated at the foot of the Vlahina Planina Mountain, on the right bank of the Struma River. Houses and six pits of the Early Iron Age were explored. The house in Sector 2 had an almost square layout. Two hearths were discovered inside and seven Thracian ceramic vessels of the beginning of the Early Iron Age (11th – 10th century BC) were found. Nine Late Antique houses and warehouses with domestic ovens, a pottery kiln and furnaces for iron metallurgy were excavated. Seventy graves were discovered in a necropolis, separated from the houses by a stone surrounding wall. The burials were with cremations and inhumations, while the cremations prevailed. The graves were funerary pits, funerary pits covered with ridge-roofed tegulae, funerary pits covered with stone slabs and cist graves. The cremations were performed outside the graves. The grave goods included ceramic and glass vessels (kernoi, pots, small cups and unguentaria), finger-rings, belt buckles and coins. The inhumation burials were 14 and mostly belonged to children. The buildings dated to AD 200 – 450 and were destroyed by fire. A coin of Nerva was terminus post quem for Grave 36. There was no data that the necropolis functioned after AD 350. The excavated structures were situated in the peripheries of an unfortified settlement and its necropolis.
