Summary (English)

  • Test-pits were dug prior to the construction of a sewer on cultivated land immediately east of Largo Rotello and via Massa di San Giuliano. Two structures came to light, the foundations of walls for the division of farm land, which can be dated to the Roman period. The first wall is built with mid to large tufa chips, fragments of tile and chips of leucitic lava bonded with mortar. Its preserved length is 13.80m, width 0.60m, and it is reinforced on the south side by a pilaster (0.24 × 0.85m). The second wall, which abuts the first at one point, comprises mid to large tufa chips bonded with a crumbly, earthy mortar and is 0.50m wide and 2.40m long. Given the typological differences, these structures probably belong to different construction phases. At a distance of circa 70m to the east of these walls a man-made cut, dug into the tufa bed-rock, was found. This is also of Roman date and related to agricultural activity of that period. The second test-pit revealed two other structures: a foundation comprising tufa chips, tile fragments, a large element in leucitic lava bonded by mortar (0.44m wide) and a structure comprising small chips of leucitic lava with a scarse bonding of sandy mortar (0.40m wide). The hypothesized passage of an ancient road is indicated on known maps exactly in the area of the channel. However, the shape of the tufa cut does not seem compatible with the characteristics of a road cutting. (Stefano Musco, L. De Michelis)
