Summary (English)

  • During the construction of new appartment buildings two walls built of large tufa blocks and evidence for a water management system came to light. The latter consists of a series of barrel vaulted cuniculae excavated into the tufa bed-rock. One runs partly below ground and partly above ground, at which point it becomes a channel. Of the two walls, one has a lower section built in large tufa blocks, the upper section in cement conglomerate and irregular tufa elements. The other comprises two courses of tufa blocks of varying dimensions. The channels that were uncovered formed part of a water management system, as attested by the abundant traces of lime deposit within them. It is not possible to give a precise interpretation of the walls. The finds recovered in the area date to a period between the end of the 4th century and the 1st century B.C. (Stefano Musco, L. De Michelis, R. Sandri)
