Summary (English)

  • PHILIPPOPOLIS (Elena Bozhinova – elena.bozhinova@gmail.com) The site was situated in the southeastern part of Philippopolis. The lowest stratum contained sherds and fragmentary building ceramics of the 2nd century AD. The next stratum contained charcoal, iron scrap and collapsed roof-tiles probably from a shelter related to iron metalwork. Clay extraction in the Early Roman period was also documented. A leveling layer was situated above and a cardo with two construction periods was built on it. Two rooms were discovered to the west of the street and sherds were found there. The inner walls were covered with red and white plaster and molded stucco decoration: cornices and friezes decorated with palmettes, astragaloi and Ionic cyma. The rooms were burned down: a collapsed wall built of sun-dried bricks and collapsed roof-tiles were discovered. The area to the east of the cardo was used for production activities: hearths, charcoal, a pit containing sherds, charcoal and clay balls, fragments from a bronze statue, pieces of melted lead and lime pits were discovered. During the next construction period, the drain beneath the cardo was raised and covered with syenite slabs from the central row of the earlier pavement. Two dugouts of the Early Middle Ages were excavated. Several pits, a wall and a floor level of the 11th – 12th centuries were discovered. A drain and a street of the end of the 12th – beginning of the 13th centuries were explored.
