Summary (English)
The excavations at the Sveti Lovre site lasted from May 3 to June 24, 2005. In this year’s campaign, along with the excavation conducted north of the church of St. Lawrence (Lovre), the works were focused on the area east of the church, inside the recent cemetery wall. That is the only previously unexcavated part inside the cemetery that colleague Gunjača used as a soil dump during his excavation of the site in 1997. This made the work much more difficult. Before the start of the excavation, approximately 100 m3 of earth and stone mound was removed. An area of 10 × 5 × 1 m was excavated. Four late medieval graves were found and excavated, and it was determined that the older, Early Croatian burials are located below them. Due to a lack of funds, this year campaign was suspended. Several jewellery items were found which, due to their temporal origin, can be attributed as ethnographic material. Many fragments of the Roman period and late antique pottery were also found. Upon completion of works, the site was prepared for the 2006 campaign, which would bring the years of excavation around the church of St. Lawrence closer to its end which will be followed by an exhibition and an extensive catalogue of research results.
As it turned out to be one of the largest Early Croatian cemeteries in the Šibenik area, along with the Danilo šematorij site, it is definitely worth thinking about the acquisition of land on which the graves are located. The number of graves from all excavations conducted amounts to over 350, and new graves can still be seen at the bottom of the trench. It would be very important to conduct the conservation and the presentation of these graves, as well as the display of the whole site (Ž. Krnčević 2006, Hrvatski arheološki godišnjak 2/2005, 339–340).
