Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR BREZNIK (Plamen Georgiev – pl_georgiev@hotmail.com) The site was situated in a sloping area. Structures Nos. 10 – 17 were excavated. Structure No. 10 was a pit containing Early Bronze Age sherds. Structure No. 11 measured 3.80 m by 2.50 m and consisted of fragmentary wattle-and-daub and Thracian sherds of the Early Iron Age, including from pyraunoi. Structure No. 12 measured 8 m by 6 m and contained Thracian sherds of the Early Iron Age, including from at least five pyraunoi. Structure No. 13 was a pile 7.80 m by 4.30 m in size, consisting of Early Bronze Age sherds, animal bones, fragmentary wattle-and-daub, flint flakes and a quern. Structure No. 14 was 3.40 – 3.50 m in diameter and was a concentration of Early Bronze Age sherds, a knucklebone, a horn from an ox and fragmentary wattle-and-daub. Structure No. 15 consisted of Early Bronze Age sherds, a terracotta loom weight and a half of a broken stone axe. Structure No. 16 was a pile, 3.40 m by 2 m in size, consisting of fragmentary wattle-and-daub and Thracian sherds of the 7th – 6th centuries BC belonging to the Basarabi Culture. Probably these were the remains of a ramshackle building constructed of wooden posts and wattle-and-daub. Structure No. 17 was a pit containing pieces of charcoal, fragmentary wattle-and-daub and Early Iron Age Thracian sherds. The site covered an area of 0.45 ha and was occupied during the Early Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. It consisted of scattered and sparsely located pits and ramshackle buildings.
