Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR KULA (Tanya Hristova – tnaidenova@abv.bg, Martin Hristov) Geophysical survey was carried out on the site and anomalies were identified. Eight cremation burials were discovered during the excavations. The cremations were done outside the graves and then the ashes were placed in ceramic urns (bowls and amphora-like vessels). Judging from the osteological analysis, the temperature of the funerary pyres reached 1000/1100°С. One of the buried individuals was an adult and five were children (three of them Infans I). A bronze plate was discovered among the cremated bones in one of the urns. The burials dated to the end of the Late Bronze Age and the transition towards the Early Iron Age (1200 – 1050 BC). A concentration of Middle Bronze Age sherds and several coins of Late Antiquity and the Ottoman period were also discovered on the site. A dug-out structure was excavated, 3.40 – 3.60 m by 3.60 – 3.70 m in size and 50 cm deep. Three pits dug into the bedrock were discovered in the structure and sherds, an iron arrowhead, an iron handle of a vessel and a silver bead of the 16th – 17th centuries were found. The structure most probably was a cellar of a house.
