Summary (English)

  • ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF KOSTA PERCHEVO (Plamen Georgiev – pl_georgiev@hotmail.com) The site was situated on a terrace on the left bank of the River of Voinishka Reka. In Sector North, structures of the end of the Late Iron Age and the beginning of the Roman period were discovered: oval and rectangular pits, debris from ramshackle walls, piles of burned fragmentary wattle-and-daub and sherds. The finds included sherds of the 1st century BC – 1st century AD, a terracotta spindle whorl, small iron knives, a reaping hook and a chisel, two ceramic melting pots, several bronze coins and a glass bead. A pottery kiln was discovered and sherds, small pieces of slag and four fibulae of the 1st century AD were found there. One of the fibulae was of the Jezerine Type with North Italian origin. A coin countermarked with a ligature that reads: AV, was discovered close to structure No. 4; it dated to the 1st century AD and was a common means of payment in the Roman legions along the Danube Limes. The structures dated to 100 BC – AD 75. In Sector South, oval pits of the Early Neolithic period were discovered, 2.70 m by 3 m in size and up to 40 cm deep, containing sherds, flint flakes and fragmentary wattle-and-daub. Two oval pits and another one, 2 m in diameter and 50 cm deep, containing sherds and a large quantity of iron slag, dated to the 1st century BC, were also discovered. A sunken-floored building, 3 m by 2 m in size, with walls of wattle-and-daub, was excavated.
