Summary (English)

  • In 2017 rescue excavations were carried out on a private lot near the Antique theater in Ohrid, where the Pendikovci family house stood until the 1970’s. Since then, a 4 m pile of modern rubble has gathered, which required an initial cleaning of the area using mechanization. The archaeological investigations on an area of 35 m2 revealed a sequence from the Hellenistic, Roman, Late Antiquity and the Medieval period. The Medieval period was represented by two burials of adult individuals. Interestingly, one was buried typically laid on the back, while the other was in flexed position on its side, with the feet and the lower part of the legs cut off and placed in the pelvic area. It is beyond doubt that the two burials belong to the same necropolis and the same period, and some of the finds from the second grave date them to the 10-11th centuries. The graves were dug in a thick layer of building rubble containing Late Antiquity coins. This rubble belonged to a 6th century public building, constructed using stone and mortar, within which a round-based bread oven was partially uncovered. The oven’s foundation was dug into the bedrock, but partially cuts thin layers from the Roman and the Hellenistic periods. These were identified solely on the basis of the mobile finds but having in mind the proximity of structures from these periods in the proximity of the trench, such layers were expected.
