Summary (English)

  • Site Mirje is situated at Mali Brig plateau above Postira, on the Island of Brač. Remains of the walls stretch over several olive groves and fence mounds and a macadam road intersects the archaeological site diagonally. Rescue excavations started in 1992 and were carried out on four occasions, with long intermissions. During 2005 smaller part of the northern and eastern wall of the structure was excavated so its entire perimeter could be defined.
In the first archaeological season, the most endangered parts in the southwestern part of the complex, which reached a height of 4 m, were cleaned and preserved. Numerous fragments of stone decorations, which were still in situ, were collected and stored. After cleaning, two wide walls were established on the western facade, reinforced with buttresses on the outside. The facade of the complex was preserved to the north only up to a height of about 1 m, and at irregular intervals it was also reinforced with buttresses. Parallel to the western wall of the complex, a series of square bases was found, next to which were collapsed monolithic columns with a square section that once supported the porch of the inner courtyard.
The main entrance to the late antique complex was on the south side, from where you could reach the inner courtyard with a portico through the vestibule. From the portico, you entered the hall on the east side through an arched door. In the extension, there were two cisterns, of which there were certainly more for the functioning of that complex (50 × 40 m). Along the perimeter walls on the north, east and south sides, there were five cisterns built of thin layered stone with an abundant coating of hydroscopic mortar. According to the finds of stone decorations, it can be assumed that the central part was occupied by the sacral building of that monastic community. The central part of the monumental lintel with Christ’s monogram was also found during the excavations. Mirje is very rich in church stone decorations produced by the Brač stonework workshops. Various fragments of early Christian plutei show that the inner sanctuary of the church was enclosed by a wide partition with a series of panels decorated with geometric, vegetal and figural motifs (Vanja Kovačić 2006, Hrvatski arheološki godišnjak 2/2005, 371–372).
