Summary (English)

  • For years, the county museum in Županja has been in possession of fragments of Roman period pottery from the Berava – Crna greda site near Štitar. Archaeologists from the museum conducted a successful survey of the location, during which dense distribution of surface finds was established. Also, aerial imagery of the same position indicates traces of human activities. Finally, from 18 to 22 July 2006 museum conducted an archaeological excavation at the site. During the research, two 5 × 5 m trenches were opened. Trench 1 was placed at the position of the most intense black spot observed in the aerial photography, following also the results of the surface survey conducted at the site. The second trench was placed at a position where the colour of the surface is less intense and the appearance of the soil changes (the soil is more compact and brighter). In the first, surface layer of both trenches, a large number of pottery fragments were unearthed. The second excavation layer in both trenches, located at a depth of about 30 to 60 cm below the surface, was yellow compact soil with only occasional finds of pottery fragments. The third layer in the first trench was sterile. In the southeast corner of trench 2, at the contact of the first and the second layer, a concentration of daub, stones and animal bones was observed. The trench was widened to include the whole backfill of a cylindrical pit with a diameter of 1.10 m. Unearthed fragments of brick, ceramic vessels, animal bones, two fibulae, a grinder, and half of a grey coarse ceramic bowl, require further processing and additional analysis.
Most fragments of pottery found during the excavation at the site belong to coarse grey or reddish pottery, and only a few fragments belong to finer vessels. Among metal finds few pieces of iron were found. Among the finds, the fragment of an anthropomorphic vessel should certainly be mentioned and it will be separately analysed. The remains of the built Roman-period structures have not been found yet. As the site is located on a private plot that is used for agriculture, archaeological works are limited and dependent on the calendar of agricultural works (Mirjana Paušak 2007, Hrvatski arheološki godišnjak 3/2006, 35–36).
