Summary (English)

  • In August 2006, rescue archaeological excavation was conducted in Srijemska street 9 (cadastral plot 3087/2, cadastral municipality of Vinkovci). The excavation was carried out at a location that is a part of the protected and registered archaeological zone of Vinkovci. This area is located in the eastern part of the town called Prkos, outside the ramparts of Roman Cibalae, but within the northern Roman necropolis. In 1896, north of the location on Srijemska Street, in Bana Jelačića Street, the so-called Marek’s grave was discovered. In the grave, a gold ring with initials, a silver fibula and a metal vessel in the form of a bust of a boy or young man were found. These items are kept in the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb. At the same time, this part of Vinkovci belongs to the so-called Ervenica workshop centre, where 17 kilns for the production of ceramic vessels have so far been discovered.
The foundations for the construction of the house at 9 Srijemska Street measured 12.68 × 11.39 m and was 0.90 m. During archaeological excavation five stratigraphic units were established: SU 1 – layer with fragments of recent rubble, followed by SU 2 – an identical layer but without finds, then SU 3 – a yellow fat sterile layer of loam. Besides these layers, SU 5 – a dark brown layer of soil with Roman-period pottery fragments, building rubble and special finds, and SU 4 – a recent waste pit, were also singled out. In addition to Roman-period potsherds, 7 special finds were also collected during the excavation: iron nails, wedges and other types of metal finds (Maja Krznarić Škrivanko 2007, Hrvatski arheološki godišnjak 3/2006, 53–54).
