Summary (English)

  • The construction of the Transport Collector II. (T K II.), which began in 2005, has continued between October and November 2006, during which an archaeological watching brief was conducted. The excavation continued on the park area in Lađarska Street in front of houses no. 1 and 2, towards Stari most bridge and under it, and into Prvog svibnja Street. The trench was 1.50 m wide and 1.20 m deep. The following layers were visible in the excavation profile: a layer of humus, a layer of backfill of mixed rubble and loam, and a layer of grey marl. In the backfilled layer of rubble, the mixed archaeological material was found: several fragments of recent and Roman-period bricks, four fragments of Roman and two fragments of modern-period pottery and 1 modern-period coin (20 para of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia with the image of Aleksandar Karađorđević on the obverse). On the section below the Stari most bridge, at a depth of 0.45 m, the remains of a modern-period wooden post were found, probably the remains of an earlier wooden bridge from the 19th century. In further excavation, the layers were as follows: a humus layer and a mixed layer of backfilled loam and rubble with fragments of recent bricks and Roman-period bricks and pottery. On the section of the trench in Prvog svibnja Street, in front of the building of the former military base, a recent wall about 1 m long appeared, leaning towards the excavation area. There, on an area of 0.50 to 0.70 m, a higher concentration of pottery fragments was found.
On October 25, a segment of the Roman wall with a pilaster was discovered. The wall is oriented NE-SW and built of bricks bound with mortar. 11 courses of bricks have been preserved, with a total height of 0.88 m. The pilaster built of bricks (0.48 m wide, and 0.30 m long) was attached to the north side of the excavated part of the wall. The wall was cleaned, documented and measured. After that, protective works were carried out: it was covered with geotextile and backfilled with fine soil to the current walking level.
In the continuation of the excavation, in front of the Kayak Club building, ceramic material (mainly Roman) and several monolithic stone blocks were found, two of which were removed by the excavator. There, the works were stopped, and the representatives of the Conservation Department in Zagreb and the investor agreed that during 2007, archaeological excavation would be carried out (Zdenko Burkowsky 2007, Hrvatski arheološki godišnjak 3/2006, 201).
